Frat Life??

I thought that we were founded to enrich the social and intellectual aspects of college life for black men. On the east coast, all we do is try to see who can get the most women or find out the most "detailed information" about our frat! What is the deal? Sororities and Fraternities were founded on christian principles. They were implemented to help our(black) communities. The purpose of these organizations are suppose to be meaningful to their members. Some people are confused about what the purpose really is. It is not the partying and social aspect that is important. WHAT IS IMPORTANT, IS COMMUNITY SERVICE AND GIVING HELP TO THOSE IN NEED.

It's crazy I see that people have such a wide definition when it comes to the purposes of the BGLO system...and don't get me wrong, there has been truth to all that has been said. Personally, I believe that my square who replied earlier about the purpose of BGLOs was to "prepare them for more advanced secret orgs" is a misnomer. Yes, the Greek organizations are similar to other orgs (i.e., Prince Hall Masons, Eastern Stars), and even the founders of some BGLOs are a part of the other "secret orgs"... HOWEVER, they were founded on a different principle, because if that were the case, people would just join the lodges and chapters of the Masons and Stars, and being "greek" would have no purpose...nor do I believe that they are more "advanced" than the Greeks...they just serve different purposes...YES, I know my history, and am a member of both types (Alpha and Mason), and undoubtedly, they serve two different purposes, and the contributions of both societies have been tremendous, especially during the civil rights era and etc...as a matter of fact, it may be more difficult in most cases to join an Alpha chapter than Mason, seeing as that there are more requirements...so I don't think one is "more advanced" than the other...I love both of the organizations dearly, and cherish them on the same level. In my opinion, the purpose of the BGLOs are expressly stated in there mottos. To me, all Greeks were founded on "similar" principles, but OBVIOUSLY, some frats/sororities are about different things...so, take it as that...(i.e., one org may believe that "manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind" is their purpose, but another may believe that the "achievement in every field of endeavor" is their purpose...SIMILAR, but DIFFERENT...so to all aspiring Greeks, choose wisely.... I don't know why fraternities not only the Ques are out of control. All of the fraternities and sororities are suppose to be set on Christian rules but it sure does not look like that on our campus, because you have fraternities hating on other fraternities and sororities hatingon other sororities this makes freshmen like me confused about what we want to do in our later years in college and what is the point of it now.

Well, as a newly inducted member of Delta Sigma Theta (Coleman Love!!) I can sort of see where you're comin' from. My sorors and I are not out of control, but when I see my bruhs on the yard I do have to shake my head sometimes. They do good as far as their community efforts, but they be gettin' wild as hell sometimes. But, I can sense that you ain't down with the madness of frat life so I guess you can be the one to make a difference in the good name of Omega. You can be the one to set an example for the other young men like you that want to be in such an outstanding organization. All I can say is do you, regardless of what your bruhs want to do. YOU are still responsible for YOU!!!!
