LeMoyne-Owen College Selects Olympic Gold Medalist Rochelle Stevens as Head Track and Field Coach

LeMoyne-Owen College Selects Olympic Gold Medalist Rochelle Stevens as Head Track and Field Coach
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 16, 2021

LeMoyne-Owen College has hired Olympic gold medalist, Rochelle Stevens, PhD. as the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Head Coach.

Stevens, a Memphis native, is a two-time Olympic competitor, winning a silver medal in the 1992 games and the gold medal for 4×400 meter race in the 1996 games. She is also a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and a United States Olympic Committee Ambassador.

Since retiring from track and field competition in 2000, Stevens has invested in young athletes and the Greater Memphis community through Rochelle’s Health and Wellness Spa, providing exercise, diet and therapeutic programs and founding the Rochelle Stevens Foundation, where she mentors young athletes, hosting track meets, sports camps and seminars.

Stevens has also served as spokeswoman and motivational speaker for Fortune 500 companies such as Nike, Maybelline, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the Bank of America.

“Dr. Rochelle Stevens is a fantastic addition to our Athletics department and the track and field program overall,” says Athletic Director William Anderson. “Her unmatched experience and commitment to young people align with the College’s mission and our goals for students.”

This announcement comes during the College’s first in-person homecoming celebration since the start of the pandemic. The Memphis Downtown Commission will kick off game day with the Magic on the Court pep rally this Saturday in Court Square where Stevens and other LOC leadership will be present.

“We’re excited to welcome Dr. Stevens and the tremendous impact she will make on our student-athletes,” Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs, LOC president. “This is the perfect addition to the LOC family as our alumni and students celebrate our historic institution for homecoming.”
