Maya Angelou Becomes the First Black Women on the US Quarter!
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on January 11, 2022 It’s official! American poet, award-winning author, civil rights activist Maya Angelou is now on the US quarter! As of January 10, 2022, Maya Angelou’s quarter is in circulation. This is the first of the American Women Quarters series from the US Mint. Angelou makes history as the first Black woman to appear on the US quarter. Angelou is most known for her literary contributions like her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and her poem, Phenomenal Woman, which boldly celebrates womanhood and all of its glory, much like this initiative of the US Mint. "It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me." Ms. Angelou died on May 28, 2014, at the age of 86. Quarters celebrating other iconic American women such as Dr. Sally Ride and Anna May Wong will be released through 2025. A portrait of George Washington will still appear on the front of the quarter, and Ms. Angelou will appear on the reverse side. The US Mint encourages everyone to look for these quarters in your change. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
