Posted By: Kennedy Williams on February 25, 2022 Established on February 25, 1837, in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, Cheyney University is the oldest and first HBCU in the nation. The school was originally named the African Institute. The name was later changed to Cheyney Training School for Teachers in 1914. It became Cheyney State College in 1959 and was renamed Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1983. Since its formation, the institution has successfully fulfilled its mission to “equip and empower students of diverse backgrounds to be visionary leaders in their chosen fields.” Just like their vision proclaims, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is “the premier educational model for academic excellence, character development, and social responsibility in all of American higher education.” The university’s graduates are known for excellence in education, politics, business, journalism, and more. Famous alumni include Ed Bradley, former CBS journalist of the program ‘60 Minutes’, Robert Bogle, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Tribune, and Joyce Abbott, the beloved educator who the hit television show ‘Abbott Elementary’ was named after. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a trailblazer for exemplary higher education, and the accomplishments of its alumni are positively impacting Pennsylvania, our country, and our world.
