The CW's All American: Homecoming Highlights HBCU Life

The CW has a new show based at an HBCU and it’s highlighting the Black college experience in a fresh new way.

A spinoff of the hit show, All American, All American: Homecoming, is a young adult sports drama set against the backdrop of the HBCU experience at Bringston University, where Black excellence is a way of life. The series follows Simone, a young tennis hopeful from Beverly Hills who is trying to fight her way back after some time away from the court.

The new show stars Clark Atlanta alum Geffri Maya Hightower, who plays Simone on All American. After making her debut during the second season of the original series, Hightower was able to secure her own show on the network.

According to Warner Bros.

TV chairman Channing Dungey, “Geffri Maya, who plays Simone, is fantastic, definitely holding the center of a love triangle-to-be in this new series. [All American: Homecoming] is also fun — the world of the HBCUs has not been seen on American television this way.”

Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll shared her inspiration behind the HBCU setting saying, “This is my way of hoping I can introduce the HBCU experience and widen the horizon for our youth as a whole. I’m completely surrounded by people who went to HBCUs, and [they have this] sense of finding themselves and finding a place where they felt permission to be whatever version of Black they were and really explore what that means.”

All American: Homecoming airs Monday nights at 9 pm EST on the CW. We’ll definitely be tuned in!
