Meet OneUnited Bank: The Largest Black Owned Bank in the Country

It is the first Black internet bank and the largest Black owned bank in the country, with offices in Los Angeles, Boston and Miami! It was founded nearly 5 decades ago in Boston, Massachusetts when four Black owned banks across the country decided to combine into one. The four banks, Founders National Bank of Commerce in Los Angeles, Family Savings Bank in Los Angeles, Peoples National Bank of Commerce in Miami and Boston Bank of Commerce in Boston shared the same mission of “creat[ing] an institution to garner [Black] spending power and channel it back to the communities we serve.” OneUnited Bank understands why Black dollars matter. “Black buying power in America today is over $1.2 trillion dollars. When focused on improving our neighborhoods and supporting Black-owned businesses that are more likely to hire Black people, those dollars become a powerful force.” The services they offer include lending, and personal, business, and online banking. Their banking products are unique and include the Unapologetically Black Card which is a Visa Debit card that features beautiful pictures of Black People and the recently introduced Greenwood Visa Debit card which celebrates the New Black Wall Street. Their website includes helpful money saving tips and a free Financial Education Center available to everyone. According to the bank’s website, OneUnited is “committed to increasing financial literacy within our communities through workshops and events” and “offering affordable financial services to meet the needs of urban communities.” OneUnited Bank is doing a great work of empowering Black consumers and educating them on the power of their dollars.
