Posted By: Kennedy Williams on March 09, 2022 North Carolina is home to 10 accredited HBCUs: Bennett College, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, John C. Smith University, Livingstone College, North Carolina Central University, Saint Augustine’s University, Shaw University, Winston-Salem University, and North Carolina A&T State University, which is the largest HBCU in the country. These North Carolina schools combined educate more HBCU students than any other state in the country. HBCUs are known for providing outstanding education and producing Black professionals, and North Carolina’s HBCUs are a hub for Black excellence. In North Carolina, HBCUs are a driving force for the state's economy. A landmark study commissioned by UNCF “makes it clear: HBCUs are economic engines in their North Carolina Communities and beyond, generating substantial economic returns year after year.” Even while having the most HBCU students in the nation already, North Carolina HBCU enrollment is rising. In 2021, North Carolina A&T reported its 8th consecutive year of growth. Washington Monthly even ranked the school among the top HBCUs in the country and one of the country’s top 135 national universities overall. North Carolina’s HBCUs are garnering national attention for their academic achievements and growth, and we love to see our beloved institutions thrive!
