Officials from Southwest Airlines will visit Texas Southern University on Thursday, March 31, 2022, to announce TSU as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to join the airline’s First Officer recruitment program – Destination 225°. (On a compass, 225° is the southwest directional heading.) The partnership will create a pathway for graduates of TSU’s Aviation Science and Technology program, which includes a Professional Pilot concentration, by leading aspiring Black and other minority pilots to Southwest Airlines.

There will be a photo opportunity with TSU President Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young and Southwest Airlines Flight Operations Vice President Lee Kinnebrew in the atrium lobby of the Science Building during a partnership signing and gift exchange ceremony, followed by additional photo opportunities when Southwest Airlines officials tour TSU’s Aviation Science program in the Spearman Technology Building.

What: Southwest Airlines Destination 225° partnership with Texas Southern University and its Aviation Science and Technology program, including a gift exchange ceremony and tour.

Who: From Southwest Airlines: Captain Lee Kinnebrew IV, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Flight Operations; Captain Dave Retnam, Senior Manager of Flight Operations; Captain Cory Petit, Manager Pilot Recruitment and Onboarding; Captain Brad Monda, Manager of Pilot Pathway Program. From TSU: Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young, President; Dr. Lillian Poats, Acting Provost; Dr. Aladdin Sleem, Interim Dean; Dr. Yi Qi, Chair of the Transportation Studies department; Dr. Terence Fontaine, Director of Aviation; Paul Griffin, TSU Aviation Science/Professional Pilot student. Elected officials have been invited.

When: Thursday, March 31, 2022, at 3 p.m. (Atrium lobby of the Science Building); 3:30 p.m. (Aviation Science program tour, including flight simulation lab; Spearman Technology Building)

Location/Parking: Texas Southern University, 3095 Blodgett St. Houston, TX 77004. Please park on the first level of the West Parking Garage, which is accessed via Ennis Street. A shuttle will transport to the Science Building.
