Shaw University Grads Create Podcast for Young Black Travelers
|
Posted By: Mariah Forde on April 27, 2022 The Black Travel Movement Gains A New Perspective Two HBCU graduates launch podcast to empower young professionals to take their PTO and explore the world that awaits On March 10th, HBCU grads Joc James and Matt P. launched the Black travel movement’s newest podcast THEE TRAVEL HOUR. This bi-weekly podcast seeks to expand upon Victor Hugo Green’s modern day Negro Motorist Green Book by amplifying personal experiences and perspectives to promote safety, confidence, and independence for Black travelers. Episodes can be heard on major streaming platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, and Google Podcast. Over the last two years, Black people have been navigating the disproportionate effects of two pandemics – COVID-19 and systemic racism. Despite the exhaustion in consequence of these effects, Black millennials are reclaiming their joy and taking to the friendly skies to explore the world. The amount of young Black travelers has skyrocketed and the need for safe spaces to connect and share experiences and insights continues to grow. Shaw University graduates Joc and Matt P. are building upon the movement by sharing their travel experiences and perspectives as young, Black, working professionals with newbies and veteran travelers alike. Their hope is to empower more working professionals to take their hard-earned PTO and to increase the representation of Black men travelers as currently only 37% of the travel movement are men. “Thee Travel Hour is more than a podcast,” says Joc. “Our hope is that this platform encourages dope black travelers to explore new places, peoples and cultures while creating a community that we can lean on to grow as travelers.” THEE TRAVEL HOUR podcast episodes cover topics ranging from traveling on a budget, travel hacks, destinations that welcome Black travelers, and more. Joc and Matt P. hope to reach listeners from various backgrounds including HBCU communities, young professional networks, Divine 9 Greek organizations, and more.
