Eight Howard University Bison Receive MEAC Softball Postseason Recognition

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on May 11, 2022 The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its softball postseason honors where Howard University had eight Bison recognized for their outstanding performances during the 2022 regular season. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon. Senior Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) highlighted HU with both Bison earning All-MEAC First Team honors. Dennis ranked among the conference leaders in several categories, including slugging percentage (.619/3rd), RBIs (41/t-1st) and homers (8/t-2nd). On April 18, she was named MEAC Player of the Week (April 18). Ricks batted .420 with 23 runs scored, 10 walks, nine RBIs and four stolen bases during conference play, including six multi-hit performances (10 overall). On April 18, she was selected MEAC Rookie of the Week. Graduate Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.), senior Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) and newcomers Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.), Payton Quinonez (Tulare, Calif.) and Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) were named to the All-MEAC Second Team. De La Roca finished the regular season third overall in total strikeouts (79), including a league-best 34 strikeout looking. She earned 13 victories on the year, including a win over Norfolk State (March) where she tossed a no-hitter. Navarro topped the nation as the toughest to strikeout after recording 15 multi-hit performances, including seven during league play. On March 7, she was selected MEAC Player of the Week. Brown burst onto the scene with six multi-hit games while finishing among the MEAC leaders in batting average (.354/7th) and triples (4/t-5th). On March 14, she was named the league's Rookie of the Week. During conference play, Qunionez ranks among the league leaders in batting average (.429/3rd) while racking up nine runs scored, six stolen bases, five RBIs and a pair of walks. Additionally, she had seven multi-hit performances during the regular season, including four in league play. Vasquez won multiple weekly awards in her first season, including the conference's Player of the Week (Feb. 14) and Rookie of the Week (Feb. 21). This year, she ranks among the league leaders in multiple categories, including batting average (.374/3rd) and OPS (.992/4th). Rookie Alyssa Watson (Eastvale, Calif.) rounded out the Bison, landing a spot on the All-MEAC Third Team. She produced a .342 batting average with 10 RBIs, seven runs scored, three stolen bases and a pair of walks during conference play. Norfolk State's (NSU) Tuli Iosefa won MEAC Player of the Year while teammate Kenna Higa and Maryland Eastern Shore's Tatum Kresley shared the league's Rookie of the Year. Morgan State's Anaya Hunte claimed the conference's Pitcher of the Year and the Hawks' Karla Ross received Coach of the Year. On May 11-14, Howard travels to Norfolk, Va., for the MEAC Tournament, hosted by NSU. Howard (27-21) enters as the No. 2 seed after going 17-4 in league play, the program's best finish since winning back-to-back MEAC Northern Division titles (2009 & 2010).
