VSU Announces New Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 02, 2022 Virginia State University and the Department of Athletics named Nadine Domond the sixth Head Women's Basketball Coach on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. "Coach Domond is a proven winner within the Rutgers University community, Grambling State University community as well as the Hampton University community," said Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Peggy Davis. "We are enthusiastic to have Coach Domond on board who brings along a wealth of knowledge, experience and success to Virginia State University to give our student-athletes an experience they rightfully deserve." Prior to her arrival to VSU, Domond, a 2019 inductee into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, was the top point guard in the nation out of Bridgeport Central High School (CT) where she accumulated 2,300 career points and led the Hilltoppers to the 1994 Class LL Championship before signing on to play for C. Vivian Stringer at the University of Iowa. While with the Hawkeyes, Domond was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree and as of 2016 still ranks 10th all-time in steals (177) and assists (357) and 11th in three-point field goals made (118). Her Hawkeyes teams captured the 1997 Big Ten Championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including the 1996 Mideast Regional Semifinal. Following her collegiate career, Domond was the 19th overall pick by the New York Liberty in the 1998 WNBA draft and also suited up for the Sacramento Monarchs. Domond also has extensive overseas experience having played in France, Poland and Israel. Led by Israel's women's national coach Eli Rabi, Domond led Bnei Yehudo to the championship playoff for the first time in history. Additionally, while with Color Cap Rybnik in Poland, she helped the squad reach its first ever final four in Poland's national championship. Domond began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Hampton University in 2002 and was elevated to assistant coach for the 2003-04 season. During the 2002-03 season, the Pirates posted a 23-9 overall record and 17-1 in MEAC play and winning to the MEAC title to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Joining the staff at the Northrop Grumman Apprentice School's women's basketball program from 2005-07, she helped guide the Builders to a third-place finish in the United State Collegiate Athletic Association Championship with a 17-11 mark in 2005-06 and 18-8 mark during the 2006-07 campaign. During her time in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Domond coached in the Boo Williams Summer League for elite select AAU teams and won the USJN Championships in Washington, D.C. in 2012. Additionally, she spent time coaching at the high school level. Most recently, Domond was the head coach at Grambling State, heading the Lady Tigers from 2014-2016. In 2015, Domond was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after compiling a 17-14 overall and 13-5 conference mark. Her 2015 squad also boasted SWAC Freshman of the Year Jazmind Boyd and National HBCU Freshman of the Year Shaklya Hill. Domond also channeled her love of training and developing players at all levels in founding Nadine Domond Elite, a basketball service that provides online networking, personal training and tournaments and workshops for young players and college coaches. During her journey, she has worked with several of the nation's top players, many who went on successful collegiate careers including All-Americans Elizabeth Williams (Duke) and Adrienne Motley (Miami), as well as the nation's leading scorer in Howard's Jay Daniels, as well as Troy Williams (Indiana). Knowing that GREATER Happens at VSU, the Trojans are eager to enter a successful era of Women's Basketball under the leadership of Coach Domond.
