Benedict College announces the Appointment of Dr. Akilah Carter-Francique as the Dean of Education, Health, and Human Services.

Dr. Carter-Francique brings to Benedict 20 years of experience in higher education, an extensive research background and a strong vision for leadership in the field of education.

Dr. Carter-Francique formerly served as the Executive Director for the Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change at San José State University (SJSU). During her three years, she promoted conversations on equity, diversity, inclusion in sport and society and provided educational forums with webinars, conferences, and collaborations events and activities with thought leaders, scholars, students, and community members.



Carter-Francique also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies where she supported course development inclusive of SJSU’s Ethnic Studies Collaborative and its General Education curriculum.

A native of Topeka, Kansas, Carter-Francique earned a double degree in 2000 at the University of Houston in Kinesiology-Exercise Science and Psychology as an undergraduate student and student-athlete in track and field. She earned her master’s degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science in 2004 and a doctorate in Sport Studies in 2008 at the University of Georgia at Athens.
