The Dillard Athletics Department Announces Hiring of Kyle Liechti To The Volleyball Coaching Staff

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 02, 2022 The Dillard University athletics department announced this afternoon, June 2, the addition of Kyle Liechti to the volleyball coaching staff. Liechti will be the lead Assistant Volleyball Coach under the direction of Dillard University Head Coach Lashaunda Spurgeon. "I'm excited about the opportunity to help Coach Spurgeon build on what she's developed in the last two seasons," Coach Liechti explained. "I'm looking forward to getting started and seeing what I can contribute in order to help this program grow even more." He joins Dillard after most recently working as the Executive Director for the CRUSH Volleyball Program in Stillwater, Oklahoma. It is a position that he held for the last four years. With CRUSH, he worked in a variety of roles including planning and preparing for their preseason clinics, organizing their practice and tournament schedules plus coordinating development clinics to further enhance the club as whole. Liechti served as the point person in organizing and directing workers and volunteers at the annual CRUSH'Em Tournament. The tournament involved hosting 8-12 teams. He also served as the lead athlete recruiter for the program. His position further involved the hiring of coaching staffs each season as well as regularly meeting with each of them to go over accomplishments and concerns. Liechti also served as the head varsity coach at Stillwater High School in Stillwater, Oklahoma for the last three years. In that period of time, he coordinated with coaches around the conference and the state to put together his team's schedule. He also scheduled, planned and conducted all practice sessions plus the review and evaluation of all game film. Liechti was also responsible for keeping individual and team statistics of each game and reporting results to national outlets including MaxPreps. Also while at Stillwater High School, Liechti planned, developed and implemented a strength and conditioning program to enable his players to achieve maximum performance results on the court. Over the last five years, Liechti has also served as one of the CRUSH Volleyball Program head coaches for the 14U, 15U, 16U and 17U. In the role, he planned practices and open gyms as well as helping develop the athletes to compete to their highest abilities at various local and national tournaments. His major wins as a head coach include first and second place in the gold, silver and bronze bracket at national tournaments. The Vail, Iowa native earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science and Production in 2018 from Oklahoma State University. Dillard's volleyball team (16-5, 8-0 GCAC in 2021) had a standout season that saw the program go undefeated in league play and capture the first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season title since 2010. The program was awarded 13 times throughout the 2021 fall with Player of the Week honors. Dillard also went on an 11-match winning streak that spanned 49 days and having to relocate to Jackson, Miss. to continue to practice and play after Hurricane Ida hit the New Orleans area. Individually, Demari Drake had a standout freshman year for Dillard in being named the 2021 GCAC Attacker of the Year, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Drake also was First Team All-GCAC, earned a spot on the NAIA American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Team (Honorable Mention) and was a Second Team selection to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana Team. Chloe Young was named the GCAC Defender of the Year for the second straight season. Desire Neal earned her fourth straight All-GCAC selection in being chosen for the first team. Young along with Taylor Hurst and Sara Da Silva were voted All-GCAC Second Team. In her two seasons as the head coach at Dillard, Coach Spurgeon is 32-12 and has a mark of 20-2 in GCAC contests. She was named the 2020 GCAC Coach of the Year in the spring of 2021 after guiding the team to a 16-7 mark with a record of 10-2 in GCAC play. The team made it all the way to the finals of the GCAC Tournament that season.
