Stillman Unveils New Court Sponsored by HBCU League Pass Plus
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 10, 2022 Stillman College Athletics revealed a new design for the basketball and volleyball court, located in Birthright Alumni Hall. Sponsored by HBCU League Pass Plus, the natural-wood maple court is emblazoned with a 15-foot-wide stained tiger positioned at center court, coupled with an interlocking "SC," freshening up the court's look after more than a decade. "We are excited to reveal this project, which is the first of hopefully many upgrades to our athletics facilities. Our basketball players were presented the opportunity to vote on and choose the design for this upgrade before the academic year ended, and we hope the Stillman community will enjoy this new look and will come see it in person this fall," said Terrance Whittle, director of athletics. The resurfacing of the court was made possible by a donation from Urban Edge Network and HBCU League Pass Plus. Earlier this year, Stillman College Athletics signed a multi-year agreement with Urban Edge Network's new HBCU League Pass Plus, the first and only HBCU sports 24/7 live streaming platform. The partnership with Urban Edge Network also creates sponsorship and fundraising opportunities for upgrades across campus. "We are pleased to partner with universities and colleges like Stillman. We will continue making major commitments to building programs that impact student life while providing safe and quality investments as we grow together," said Todd F Brown, CEO of Urban Edge Network. "Urban Edge Network was created to transform the landscape in advertising monetization for HBCUs. It is our goal to bring advertising dollars, Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) income, and streaming video enabled by AdTech to 101 historically black college and university communities, students, and alumni." The network will broadcast all available sports and other university-related content with channel 101 dedicated to Stillman College athletics on HBCU League Pass+. The channel will also include other content from across student life. This allows Stillman to join Urban Edge Network in this latest black-owned media initiative. The live streaming network is primed to create new revenue streams for the educational institution and ensure access for fans, students, and alumni to watch their teams play on-demand 24/7 across all digital devices anywhere there is an internet connection. "This partnership with Urban Edge Network Inc. will add to the historical footprint of Stillman College and its 146 year history of providing educational opportunities," Whittle said. "This will further allow us to be creative in how we continue to expand, provide resources, align with and grow the brand of Stillman College athletics and other stakeholders of the institution. We are excited about this and look forward to ensuring continued access and opportunity to Stillman College for our students, fans, and alumni." The newly revised women's volleyball program will host the first intercollegiate event on the new surface on Sept. 13 when Stillman plays Blue Mountain College. There will be nine home volleyball matches in September and October, with the home basketball season beginning in November. The inside of each 3-point arch is stained with the lanes painted blue and featuring the Southern States Athletic Conference logo. A 2-foot blue border surrounds the court, with 4.5-foot letters spelling out Stillman College facing the stands on each sideline and Tigers on the baselines. The design includes black basketball game lines and white volleyball lines. Alabama Gym Floors in Pelham, Alabama worked on the sanding and refinishing project, which began May 16. The design was created by Natorio Howard, Stillman College's Director of Brand Identity.
