Johnson C. Smith University Rising Sophomore Emanuel Biddy Lands Lockheed Martin Space Internship

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on June 13, 2022 Rising sophomore Emanuel Biddy ’25 is over the moon after landing an internship with one of the nation’s leading aerospace companies. Biddy, a Washington, D.C. native and JCSU Computer Science student, is using the knowledge he’s developed in the classroom to work as a software engineer intern this summer. “I am working with the space division writing front-end code for the nuclear defense team,” he said. “In the classroom at JCSU, I learned a lot of basic code for the language Java, but that opened up the door for so many other languages. I’m already learning a lot.” Lockheed Martin is headquartered in Bethesda, Md., and focuses on global security and aerospace technology. The company is responsible for building the world’s first turbojet airlifter. According to its website, interns at Lockheed Martin are given the opportunity to gain real-world experience and contribute knowledge to some of the world’s most challenging projects while working alongside industry professionals. “I’m learning to leverage JIRA to coordinate the management of projects and daily SCRUM meetings, and learning about digital twins,” Biddy said. “I’m learning a lot about the company, too.” What may sound like rocket science to everyone else is quickly becoming a language Biddy is learning to speak well. He credits Terik Tidwell, executive director of the Smith Tech-Innovation Center, with inspiring him to go for the internship. “He said, ‘Do what you need to do, so you’ll be able to do what you want to do,’ and that quote stuck with me,” Biddy recalled. Biddy said his internship is inspiring him to continue to learn and grow and take his career to new heights after he graduates. He hopes to find a career in the aerospace industry, adding that it is rewarding to see his work come to life. When he returns from his internship, Biddy will begin another year at JCSU in the Computer Science program where he will also pursue a minor in Cybersecurity. The Computer Science program strives to teach its students a variety of programming languages to make them competitive in the job market. Biddy is one of many students in the program to spend their summer interning with government agencies, big-name organizations and Fortune 500 companies.
