Edward Waters Men's Basketball Signs Six for 2022-23

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 22, 2022 Going into his fifth season at the helm of the Edward Waters Men's Basketball program, head coach Fred Summers knew he needed to get bigger and more athletic with his players going into next season, the Tigers first full season as a member of the SIAC. In his quest to do that, Summers announced the signing of six student-athletes that will debut in Purple & Orange for the 2022-2023 season. JUCO transfer Adnan Hussein, Division I transfers Lavar Batts, Jesse Johnson, and Larry Kuimi, Division II transfer Tavares Oliver, Jr., and high school signee Andre Myers have signed letters of intent to play for EWU. Adnan Hussein | 6'3 | 170 lbs. | Guard | Washington, D. C. | Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College: One of the most lethal shooters in all of Division I Junior College Men's Basketball, Adnan Hussein will make his highly anticipated debut for Edward Waters next season. A native of our nation's capital, Hussein transfers to Tiger Nation from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, where he played for head coach Jeremy Jackson. Last season, Hussein helped lead the Norsemen to a 19-11 overall record and a 9-7 conference mark. Hussein appeared and started in all 30 games at NEO and was 10th in the NJCAA in 3pt shooting percentage at 47.6%.. He also shot 46.6 % from the floor, and was an 81.5% free throw shooter. Lavar Batts, Jr. | 6'2 | 185 lbs. | Guard | Concord, North Carolina | UNC Asheville: Batts comes to EWU after spending two seasons at UNC Asheville in 2019-20 and 2020-21. A native of Concord, North Carolina, Batts started all 31 games at point guard for the Bulldogs in 2019-20, averaging 27.5 minutes per game, 12.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg and led the team with 2.5 assists per game. Batts also led the Big South Conference and ranked 65th nationally with 1.8 steals per game, while his 55 total steals ranked 61st in the nation. Prior to his time at UNCA, Batts was a signee at N. C. State, where he played in 30 games for the Wolfpack as a freshman. At N. C. State, Batts averaged 3.7 points, 1.5 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game. Batts had a season-high five assists in N. C. State's upset of second-ranked Duke on Jan. 6. Coming out of high school, Batts was listed as the top-ranked player in the state of North Carolina by 247Sports and Rivals . The consensus four-star recruit was ranked among the top-100 players in the country as a senior by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN. Batts played his high school basketball at Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, N.C. for his father, Lavar Batts, Sr. He ended his prep career as the all-time leading scorer in Cabarrus County history with 2,174 points. In leading his team to the state quarterfinals, Batts averaged 23.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game as a senior. One year earlier as a junior at Jay M. Robinson, Batts averaged 20.7 points, 5.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game to lead his high school team to the North Carolina Class 3A State Championship. Batts was chosen the North Carolina MVP of the Carolinas Classic and he was named the MVP and Slam Dunk champion at the CabCO Classic All-Star Game. Batts played his AAU basketball for Chris Paul's Team CP3. Jesse Johnson | 6'7 | 212 lbs. | Forward | Memphis, Tennessee | Univ. of Memphis Coach Summers traveled back to his hometown and snagged fellow Memphis native Jesse Johnson who will play for EWU next season. Johnson has Division I experience, playing for Memphis in 2017-18, and Alabama A&M in 2015-16. Johnson was also a junior college transfer, playing at Walters State. Johnson was a 56.2% shooter from the floor, and was 58.3% from the free throw line. Johnson also 2.4 rebounds per game, and 0.3 blocks per contest for the Senators. Larry Kuimi | 6'7 | 215 lbs. | Forward/Center | Missouri City, Texas | Jackson State Univ. A Missouri City, Texas native, Kuimi comes to Edward Waters as a transfer from Jackson State. Prior to his time at JSU, Kuimi appeared in 29 games and started in 12 at Tennessee Tech for his Junior season in 2019-20. Before appearing at TTU, Kuimi played at Lee College, where he started 29 and played in all 30 of his team's games during the 2018-19 season. He averaged 8.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game, while also shooting 56.6 percent from the field, averaging 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Kuimi scored in double figures 14 times during the season, snagged 10 or more rebounds in seven contests and hauled in at least five boards 18 times, and finished the season with six double-doubles. He also blocked three or more shots in nine games. Coming out of high school, Kuimi played one season as a freshman at Oklahoma City University. Kuimi played in 28 of the team's 30 games for the Stars, making five starts and averaging 8.6 minutes per game. He also averaged 2.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game, and shot 50 percent from the field for the year. Tavares Oliver, Jr. | 6'1 | 165 lbs. | Guard | Macomb, Michigan | Morehouse Coll. Tavares Oliver, Jr. comes to Edward Waters after appearing in five games at Morehouse College last season as a sophomore junior college transfer. In an exhibition matchup against Georgia Tech last season, Oliver, Jr. led the Maroon Tigers with 16 points, the only player to reach double figures in the contest. Oliver, Jr. transfered to Morehouse from Mott Community College, where he played in 27 games in 2018-19. During that season at Mott, Oliver, Jr. shot 40.2% from the floor, 39.3% from 3pt range, and was a 79.2% free throw shooter. Andre Myers | 6'3 | 190 lbs. | Guard | Rembert, South Carolina | Andrew Jackson H. S. Born in Rembert, S. C., Andre Myers comes to EWU after a successful career at Jacksonville's Andrew Jackson High School where he played for head coach James Collins. Myers helped lead the Tigers to the 2021-22 Gateway Conference Boys Basketball Championship, the FHSAA District 3, Class 4A Championship, a Class 4A Regional Title, and an apperance in the Class 4A Championship Game. Last season, Myers played in 27 games for the Tigers, averaging 7.3 ppg, and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Myers was also an Honorable Mention All-First Coast High School Boys Basketball selection by the Florida Times-Union.
