Starting Out: How To Become A Medical Assistant

Starting Out: How To Become A Medical Assistant
Posted By: Anica Oaks on June 24, 2022

If you want to pursue a career in health care, becoming a medical assistant can be a great choice. Medical assistants are a job that is currently in high demand and is expected to remain that way throughout the decade. Being a medical assistant will give you a great salary, excellent benefits, job security, and the ability to help others when they are ill. To start out on your path to this exciting career, here are some steps you need to take.

Get Practical Experience

To make sure you get the best job, plan on getting as much practical experience as possible. Once you enroll in a program of study, it will likely include internships at hospitals or doctor's offices. But even before then, you can position yourself for a great job by volunteering at hospitals, free clinics, or other similar places where you can get hands-on experience working with patients.

Choose an Accredited Program

When you are looking over various medical assistant programs, always be sure the one you select to complete is accredited. If it is not, you could find yourself having difficulty securing employment after you finish. As to programs you can complete, these can run the gamut from technical schools to colleges and universities.

Some colleges offer Bachelor's degrees in medical assistance. However, you can usually get sufficient training at a local tech school or community college. Most programs take one or two years to complete.

Get Certified

In some situations, employers will want to only hire medical assistants who are board-certified. Therefore, once you complete your program of study, get certified by taking either the Certified Medical Assistant exam or the Registered Medical Assistant exam. Testing your knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and legal and ethical guidelines. Having either of these certifications on your resume can get you a great job.

Do You Want to Specialize?

Since medical assistants work in all types of healthcare facilities, you should decide early on if there is a certain area within the medical field in which you would like to specialize. For example, if you prefer working with senior citizens, you may want a medical assistant job at an assisted-living facility. However, if you have aspirations of becoming a nurse or even a doctor someday, working in a hospital may be a smart decision.

Once you become a medical assistant, you will realize you definitely made the perfect career choice. You will spend your days helping patients deal with a variety of medical conditions and other issues. Look forward to these days.
