Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 24, 2022 Fayetteville State University was honored with its first-ever Loretta Taylor Women's All-Sports Award by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) at its annual Spring General Assembly meeting and end-of-year awards reception in Baltimore, MD. As the celebration of the 50th year of Title IX and the advancement of female sports begins to spread across the country, Fayetteville State has been developing an annual contender and conference leader. The FSU women pulled off the triple crown in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (co-champions) as well as claiming the women's volleyball title. "I'm very appreciative of the hard work that the coaches, student-athletes, and staff have put in this year," said CIAA Athletics Director of the Year Anthony Bennett. "I don't take their dedication and commitment for granted. To bounce back from a COVID year and accomplish so much makes me truly proud to be a Bronco." The women's cross-country program won its fourth consecutive title in Salem, Virginia. Head Coach Inez Turner was named the women's coach of the year for the fourth time with five runners earning All-CIAA honors this season. Turner coached her way to a second coach of the year honor after the Broncos won back-to-back indoor track & field titles. Jade Jordan captured the women's field MVP and Mya Johnson the track event's MVP. After the final event of the 2022 Outdoor Championships, a first-place finish by the 4x400-meter relay squad gave the Broncos enough points to tie Winston-Salem State for a share of the CIAA crown. Turner was Co-Coach of the Year with WSSU's coach. Mya Johnson was named the CIAA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and Shania Ingram the Field Athlete of the Year. FSU was the 2019 outdoor runner-up in its first year under Turner. The volleyball program claimed its back-to-back title in 2021 with a sweep over Shaw. Six Broncos received post-season accolades with Da'Nesha Miller earning the Food Lion Tournament Most Valuable Player award for the second straight time. The women's bowling program wrapped up the season as the runner-up at the championship tournament with four All-CIAA performers and two All-Tournament bowlers. The softball and women's basketball teams were seeded fifth for their championship tournament. Two basketball players earned All-Conference honors. Loretta J. Taylor is a former Fayetteville State women's head basketball coach (1944-1977) and Bronco Hall of Famer. She was with the Broncos during an important time for gender equality in collegiate sports in America. Taylor served the institution for over 32 years, mainly as an instructor and coach. She was named the CIAA Coach of the Year in 1974-75 when the Broncos finished 18-2. Her Broncos finished as CIAA Runners-up twice.
