Virginia Union University (VUU) announced today its award-winning recognition for its work in social, video, and television production of two films, Virginia Union University Vision and the Community Leaders Celebration to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The University received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, two Silver Telly Awards and an Emmy nomination for excellence in storytelling and video production.

"We are proud to be the recipient of such highly-respected awards and showcase the talent of the brilliant storytellers at the university and in our community," said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President, and CEO of VUU. "Telling the story of this institution, from our immediate response to the pandemic to the vibrant history of molding change agents in our nation, is paramount, as it speaks to the limitless possibilities available to our surrounding communities."

The Telly Awards honors excellence in video and television across all screens and is judged by leaders from well-known video platforms, television, streaming networks, and production companies. The Telly Awards attracted over 12,000 submissions in all 50 states and five continents this year.

The University was named a Silver Telly Award Winner for Social Video in Education and Discovery for Virginia Union University Vision, a video highlighting the University's immediate response to the shifting landscape of higher education due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, VUU received another Silver Award for its 43rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Celebration in partnership with WTVR – CBS 6 and sponsored by Dominion Energy. The televised event honors members of the Richmond and Hampton Roads community who embody the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

by serving their "beloved community."

"I am beyond thrilled with the reception of the MLK Community Leaders Awards broadcast not only from viewers but from our peers in the television and video industries," said Felicia Cosby, Director of Government and Community Relations at VUU. "Our goal was to make sure that the broadcast continued to reflect the spirit of MLK and the vision of the pioneers of the MLK Community Leaders Breakfast and Learners Week like Rev. TC Millner and the late Rev. Willie Woodson."

The MLK Community Leaders Awards broadcast also received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award and a Capital Emmy nomination. The Regional Edward R. Murrow Award honors outstanding broadcast and digital journalism achievements and includes media in Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Delaware. Regional winners will advance to the National Murrow Award competition. Similarly, the Capital Emmy Chapter recognizes outstanding individual achievements in the television industry.

"We are excited about VUU's award recognition by our colleagues in multimedia. But, more importantly, it is a chance to share VUU with a broader audience," said Brian Bullock, VUU's Senior Producer and Videographer. "We have an amazing history, and today's work builds on that rich legacy. Our production team is looking forward to sharing more of VUU's story."
