Posted By: Kennedy Williams on July 08, 2022 The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff head women's basketball coach Dawn Thornton has done it again. The Lady Lions inks another Power Five transfer, Maori Davenport, a former 5-star who comes to the Golden Lions Nation from the University of Georgia. Coach Thornton and her staff have built something special over the last year as the women's basketball program has become a premier destination for top-tier student-athletes after building a strong culture. The signing of Davenport makes the UAPB women's basketball program a strong contender to play for a conference championship and a trip to the big dance, with the return of former five-star and McDonald's All-American Zaay Green and a talented recruiting class to add with key student-athletes that's returning. "Maori bring a dominant paint presence to our program," Thornton said. "With great length and a serious wingspan, she has an advantage to be one of the best rim protectors on the defensive end. We love her ability to set solid screens, which should allow us to have more scoring opportunities for our guards. She is a very efficient passer and a strong rebounder. Offensively, Maori runs the floor well and does a tremendous job of ducking in opponents and finishing plays in traffic. Davenport is one that can score a lot of different ways and has also had elite experience playing at the highest levels." In high school, Davenport was among 30 young women who accepted an invitation to participate in the 2019 USA Women's U19 World Cup Team trials. "Defensively, Maori is going to make an immediate impact defensively for the Lady Lions. Maori is a winner, and I look forward to watching her have a great career at UAPB." Davenport on UAPB: "Having an opportunity to play at an HBCU means a lot to me. I chose UAPB because of the culture of the women's basketball program and the vibe that "Coach T" and I have. Everything is centered around family and I immediately felt a bond with the staff and my teammates on my visit." "I want to be able to grow and be a better person as well as a college basketball student-athlete and without a doubt, I know "Coach T" will help me." Davenport started her collegiate career at Rutgers, playing for the Legendary Coach C. Vivian Stringer.
