Bowie State Names New Director of Public Safety and Chief of Campus Police

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on July 14, 2022 Bowie State University has appointed Mark Cummings as its new Director of Public Safety and Chief of Campus Police. He will officially begin leading the department on July 22, 2022 and will bring years of experience in law enforcement to the campus community. Most recently, Cummings served as the Capitol Heights, Md. Police Department’s Chief since October 2017, where he introduced a plan for improved community policing and heightened police visibility throughout the town. Prior to his position in Capitol Heights, Chief Cummings was a Maryland State Police officer for over 25 years with assignments in counties across the state. “Chief Cummings is a seasoned law enforcement professional and brings over 30 years of public safety experience to Bowie State University,” said Anthony P. Savia, vice president of administration and finance at Bowie State. “We conducted an in-depth search to identify Cummings and I am confident he is an excellent match for the position and will excel in leading BSU’s Police and Public Safety teams.” Cummings has expertise in emergency preparedness, human capital management, surveillance, and investigations. He is known as an excellent communicator and committed to community policing. He was twice named Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for the Rockville, Md. Barrack of the Maryland State Police. Chief Cummings received his Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from John Hopkins University.
