DSU to Host HBCU Philanthropy Symposium

The 12 th annual HBCU Philanthropy Symposium will be held in the nation’s capital for the first time, focusing on ensuring the sustainability and future of Historically Black Colleges and
Universities. Highlights will include a panel with executives from The Walt Disney Company and the Propel Center on empowering the next generation of storytellers; keynotes by Thurgood Marshall College Fund and United Negro College Fund leaders; and a panel of HBCU Presidents.

WHAT: Hosted by Delaware State University (DSU), the theme for this year’s conference is “It’s Our Time: Building on the Historical Value of HBCUs.” Keynotes, presentations, and networking will focus on ways to drive student success; enhance student-talent pipelines and career pathways; grow alumni
engagement; secure scholarship money; and build innovative partnerships with other schools and the private sector. You can see the full agenda here.

WHEN: July 20-22, 2022.
Day One (1-6 p.m.) with speakers including DSU President Dr. Tony Allen, chair of the White House Advisory Board on HBCUs; Dr. Harry Williams of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund;
Delaware State University Foundation President and HBCU Philanthropy Symposium Founder Dr.



Vita Pickrum, CASE VP of Strategic Partnerships Brian Flahavan, and a panel on Partnerships Between Funders and HBCUs led by Kresge Foundation Managing Director Bill Moses. Day 2 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) includes a keynote from Dr. Deitra Trent, executive director of the White
House Initiative of HBCUs. There will also be breakout sessions and panels featuring university and corporate leaders on such topics as Building the Talent Pipeline Through the Lens of Health
Equity, Mastercard Engagement and Partnership with HBCUs, young alumni engagement, major gift fundraising, building better boards, and HBCU athletics fundraising. Day 3 (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) includes keynotes by executives from the Strada Education Network; the United Negro College Fund; and Diageo North America.

WHY: The HBCU Philanthropy Symposium brings together HBCU and Minority Serving fundraisers, funders, leaders, community advocates, and philanthropists to discuss University growth and
philanthropic enrichment.

Presenting sponsors are The Propel Center, an innovation and learning hub for the entire HBCU community supported by founding partners Apple and Southern Company, and the Kresge Foundation, which works to expand opportunity in America’s cities through grantmaking and social investing.
