Former Dillard University Associate Head Women’s Basketball Coach Loretta Martin Has Been Added to the Staff At Xavier
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on July 22, 2022

Former Dillard University Associate Head Women's Basketball Coach Loretta Martin was recently added to the athletics staff at Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) as the Assistant Athletic Director for Game Day Management and is resigning her coaching position at Dillard. She will start her new position at XULA on August 1.

In her position at XULA, Martin's job will be to enhance the game day experience by forging strong relationships with the campus students, faculty, staff as well as Alumni and community partners.

Coach Martin attended Dillard University and is a 2010 alumna with a bachelor's degree in Educational Studies. She played basketball at DU for former Dillard Athletics Director and then head women basketball coach Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes

"My 13 years at Dillard University have been nothing short of amazing," Coach Martin exclaimed. "I have met many people that will always be close to my heart. Dillard was a wonderful place to work and grow. The administration was my first love at Dillard. It is where it all started and when the coaching opportunity came about I enjoyed everything about that too. To the women's basketball athletes, I love you for trusting in me. I will always love you, girls!!! Signing out the youngest (Loretta Martin) out of The Trio (Kiki, Retta and Rome). Dillard University will always be special to me."

Martin will leave behind a legacy that has seen her women's basketball teams as a coach win nearly 120 games. Dillard's women's basketball teams have won 19 or more games in a season three different times including going 23-6 with a mark of 9-3 in the GCAC in 2017-18 on their way to winning both the GCAC Regular Season Title and the GCAC Tournament Championship plus a berth into the NAIA Women's Basketball Tournament.

She was part of the coaching staff that helped DU women's basketball teams make it back-to-back years with the GCAC Tournament Championship in 2018-19 when the program went 21-12 overall and had a 9-5 mark in the conference as the team made its second straight berth into the NAIA Women's Basketball Tournament.

A total of 24 of her players have been selected to GCAC All-Conference Teams during her time on the sidelines with the program including three last season as Diniaa McZeal and Taylor Dewitt being Second Team All-GCAC and JaQuanna Hunter earning a spot on the league's All-Defensive Team. She has helped recruit and developed a pair of players that have earned GCAC Freshman of the Year honors and seen four of her players earn places on the GCAC's All-Defensive Team. She has coached five different players to places on the GCAC All-Tournament Team including the MVP of the tournament in both 2018 and 2019. She has also seen 17 players selected as a GCAC Weekly Award during his time on the sidelines.

Her players and teams have also made their mark nationally with eight selections to NAIA All-American Teams, a WBCA Good Works Team selection (2013-14), a WBCA Academic Honor Roll team selection (2013-14), five times seeing one of his teams being recognized as an NAIA Scholar Athlete Team Award and mentoring the sport winner for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholarship Award (2019 – Shaelynn Moore) among the nine times an individual from one of her teams has been honored with a place on one of the individual sport teams for the national organization.

During her time at Dillard, her teams have also stood out in the classroom with 55 selections to the GCAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll (3.0 and higher individual cumulative GPAs for the year) with 16 of his players also being recognized as Daktronics Scholar Athletes.

Coach Martin has also proven her versatility during her time at DU as she served as the Assistant Volleyball Coach and then the Interim Head Volleyball Coach during the 2019 school year. It was a season in which the program advanced all the way to the championship game of the GCAC Volleyball Tournament.
