Interview with Tuskegee University's First Female Pilot, Morgan Johnson

 Interview with Tuskegee University
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on August 03, 2022

Morgan Johnson, owner of fashion brand Era-Vera and Tuskegee University alum shares insight on her experience at an HBCU and gives advice for Black Youth who may feel conflicted about going to an HBCU. Ms. Johnson was interviewed by Nia Menifee.

Q: How did that time at Tuskegee form you into the woman you are today?
"It changed my pace in life. Being at Tuskegee definitely slowed me down and kept me from falling into a superficial vibe in college. It made me more well-rounded and made me understand people more."

Q: If you could tell a freshman one thing what would you tell her?
"GET MORE INVOLVED! Figure out who you are, what you like, and get involved! Chase the things that you really like rather than doing the stereotypical things."

Q: Do you have any advice for young Black
Youth looking to pursue a career in the STEM
Field?
"I never would have thought I’d have access to a career
in STEM since I wasn’t good in math.

A lot of people are
born with the feeling or intuition to know this is what they’re
good at and if you don't have it don’t discourage yourself.”

Q: What accomplishments of yours are you most proud
Of?
“I was proud when I got my private pilot license. I
also was one of the only people in my family to graduate.
My biggest release on my clothing line was a Tuskegee Airmen shirt.”

Q: Are the Tuskegee Airmen what made you want to pursue a career in aviation?
"Honestly, I didn't know much about them until my senior year of college. What made me go into aviation was my then best friend now boyfriend got a scholarship and told me, 'You can do this. They're looking for girls' and he ended up being right and I became the first female licensed pilot for the program.

Q: If I were to want to go into fashion, where would you tell me to start?
"I would just say take a small class and learn basics and watch Youtube videos. I learned a lot of stuff by doing it on my own. You can do a lot on Youtube University."
