Dr. Ashton Cleveland Announced as New Vice President for Student Affairs at Shaw University
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on August 11, 2022

Shaw University announced Dr. Ashton Cleveland as its new Vice President for Student Affairs. Cleveland is originally from Miami, Florida, and holds an M.Ed. from UCLA, a J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership & Policy from Vanderbilt University. Cleveland is joining Shaw University from the University of California, San Diego where he previously served as Dean of Student Affairs. He brings a breadth of experience overseeing processes for Residence Life, Case Management, Student Conduct, Academic Integrity, Student Life, and Students of Concern Response Teams.

Cleveland also brings his invaluable experience from working on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and has contributed to internal policy revisions for numerous higher education institutions. Earlier in his career, Cleveland taught 7-12th grades in Inglewood, California, and 9-12th grades in Albany, Georgia.

As a former K-12 teacher, Cleveland enjoys merging P-16 literature and philosophies into strategies that inform higher education practices, especially as it pertains to 1st generation college students and historically underserved populations.

Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard said, “We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Ashton Cleveland to Shaw University as the Vice President of Student Affairs as we prepare to bring our students back on campus full-time for the fall semester. His wealth of experience and student-centric approach blends the right combination of care and compassion to help prepare and mentor these future leaders.” Shaw University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, is the first historically Black institution of higher education founded in North Carolina and is among the oldest in the nation. The University was founded in 1865 by Henry Martin Tupper. Dr. Paulette Dillard currently serves as the University’s 18th President. For more information, visit: www.shawu.edu
