A Stellar Year for Professional and Graduate School Acceptance for School of Natural Science Graduates

A Stellar Year for Professional and Graduate School Acceptance for School of Natural Science Graduates
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on August 17, 2022

Tougaloo College has a long-standing history of producing students who matriculate on to a graduate or professional school. It is continuously revered as a top producer of doctors, lawyers, judges, and educators. This year, Tougaloo College's School of Natural Science (SNS) and its students had a stellar year reaching a 70% placement rate for students going on to a graduate or professional school program. In addition to the ten that are going on to Medical School, the list below outlines the list of students going on to new beginnings in fields of Optometry, Pharmacology, and Veterinary medicine to name a few.

According to Dr. Jinghe Mao, Dean of SNS, the recent success of the department is a result of the faculty's dedication and cohesiveness. As an added benefit, Dr. Mao says the small class sizes and personal attention each student receives adds value to the educational experience.

While we commend the students for their hard work and commitment to their studies, we also extend accolades to Dr. Mao and the SNS Pre Health Committee Chair, Dr. Bianca Garner for their commitment to advancing the program and pipeline for opportunities. Dr. Garner has led the way in establishing partnerships with schools like Mississippi State University (MSU) School of Veterinary Medicine and Xavier University (XU) School of Pharmacy.

Having this number of students matriculating on to these highly esteemed programs underscores why the ongoing research and training that SNS professors provide undergraduates is supremely important. This kind of engagement prepares them for the rigor that they will encounter in their programs.

Having access to the Jackson Heart Study Undergraduate Training and Education Center, the public health certificate program, and the partnership with the School of Public Health at Brown University continues to pique students’ interest in the field of public health.

Additionally, the college has a Pre-Health Club that offers weekly opportunities like hosting speakers, who are able to introduce students to career options in the field expanding their horizon for the careers that they will one day enter.
