Harris-Stowe State University and R. Whittington Foundation partner for free suit giveaway for high school students

Harris-Stowe State University and R. Whittington Foundation partner for free suit giveaway for high school students

Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) is partnering with the R. Whittington Foundation for Dress Up Suit Up, a young men's empowerment event that will provide free business suits, scholarship opportunities, and giveaways to male high school juniors and seniors.

The event will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Emerson Performance Center on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University.

Hosted by "Shorty Da King," HSSU's Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Jeff Shaw, said the event's goal is to set students up for success as they graduate high school and enter college.

"One of our main focuses at Harris-Stowe is making college accessible," Shaw said. "We want to create an additional enrollment opportunity for students who just graduated from high school or who are about to graduate from high school to be able to enroll in college."

The R. Whittington Foundation is working with several organizations to donate suits and professional attire to students who attend the event. In addition, students can be measured on-site if they are unsure of their suit size.

Founder of the R. Whittington Foundation, Rickey Whittington, said he has always been passionate about helping youth in underserved communities.

"For me, it's all about the students and helping them succeed," Whittington said. "Some students may not even have access to tailored suits at this age; I didn't. So, I want to help ensure we're giving them the tools to be successful and professional attire is important."

Students are encouraged to bring a copy of their transcripts to apply for admission to HSSU at the event. HSSU's Office of Admissions will be providing on-site scholarships.

In addition, students could potentially receive gift cards, headphones, laptops, shoes, giveaways, and more. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a live DJ to create a family-friendly environment.
