Central State University Assistant Professor gets national recognition

Central State University Assistant Professor gets national recognition
Posted By: on October 26, 2022

Central State University is proud to announce that Dr. Brandy Phipps, assistant professor in the John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture, has received the Association for Women in Science’s Spark Award.

According to the AWIS press release, the award recognizes career achievements, strong leadership skills, innovative thinking, and commitment to inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility of AWIS members. Specifically, the Spark Award highlights early career leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math who are visible and vocal advocates for diversity and inclusive scientific practices.

The awards nomination process is open to all, and nominations are accepted from both AWIS members and the general public. “This year, AWIS received a number of exceptionally qualified nominations for scientists in fields from artificial intelligence to genomic characterization,” the press release said.

“We are enormously proud of our faculty and encourage them to advance diversity and inclusion in our organization and beyond. We are thrilled to have Dr. Phipps as an engaged and active member of our team,” said Central State University President Dr. Jack Thomas.

Phipps is an Assistant Professor with a research focus on the intersection of climate change; nutrition/health equity and food systems transformation; and holistic interactions of biomolecules in plant extracts and foods; and the mechanisms of biomolecules in the prevention/alleviation of disease. Her research and collaborations focus on how to transform food production systems in ways that protect natural resources, produce nutrient-dense products, and increase diversity in the agriculture and STEM workforce.

With 20 years of higher education teaching experience in the biological and life sciences, Phipps currently teaches anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and undergraduate research classes.

“She is particularly passionate about providing educational equity, advanced experiential STEM learning opportunities, and personalized mentoring to Persons Excluded because of Ethnicity or Race students and those who have been socially and economically disadvantaged,” said https://www.centralstate.edu/academics/cse... Additionally, she is the Project Director on a $10 million U.S. Department of Agriculture funded project and Co-Principal Investigator on $1.5 million in other USDA- and FDA-funded projects.

“Recognizing the achievements of women scientists is an integral part of the AWIS mission,” said Meredith Gibson, AWIS Chief Executive Officer. “We received a record number of nominations for members at all stages of their careers. It was wonderful to see so many women making significant contributions to science while also working to advance diversity and inclusion in their organizations and beyond. We are so pleased and proud to have these amazing leaders among our membership.”

According to AWIS, Phipps’s current research work provides significant funding for Native American students to complete STEM degrees and have cross-cultural and experiential learning opportunities, undergraduate research training, and peer-mentoring to help them gain leadership skills.

She has held or currently holds positions including Central State University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council (DEI); the 2020 DEI task force of the American Society for Cell Biology; a multi-institutional committee to create equitable and sustainable partnerships between Predominately White Institutions and Minority-Serving Institutions; and a DEI task force/community of practice for aquaculture.

Phipps has served as a session presenter, conference moderator, and invited lecturer at several conferences, workshops, and departments focusing on topics within STEM research and education. In addition, she has been called upon to provide testimony to the U.S. Congress.
