Central State University Launches GivingTuesday with actor James Moses Black

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on November 07, 2022 GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Central State University is celebrating the day by asking for donations to the University through the same platforms. Throughout the month of November, GivingTuesday events provide an opportunity to take pride in supporting all the students on the campus of Central State University by contributing through the website and on social media platforms. The donation will directly and instantaneously impact current, and future, students at Central State University. According to www.givingtuesday.org, GivingTuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. It kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. On Tuesday, November 29, the University is presenting a Marauder-thon at the Student Center that will stream live on Facebook and YouTube. Marauder-thon host actor James Moses Black, graduated from CSU in 1988. According to Black, “CSU gave him more than education, it provided him with a way of life.” Entertainment will be available and audience members will be able to call in donations to a phone bank located in the Student Center or attend the event, in person. The GivingTuesday website shares numerous inspiring stories of generosity from around the world. Central State University has a local story that began in July 2020: Central State University President Dr. Jack Thomas made a pledge toward the creation of a new Presidential Scholarship Fund. In a video released on the university website, Dr. Jack Thomas said he was motivated to make the gift to show solidarity with university employees financially affected by COVID-19. “Though it was difficult for the university to institute furloughs and wage reductions, these were prudent decisions to ensure that Central State remains on sound financial footing,” he said. “I would not ask others to endure sacrifices that I’m not willing to endure myself. Today, I’m pledging $50,000 from my salary to create a Presidential Scholarship Fund for our students.” Thomas said his commitment is just the beginning for the Presidential Scholarship Fund and for Central State University. “I will immediately seek a $50,000 matching gift and continue to leverage that cumulative $100,000 investment to bring other contributors to this fund so that Central State University’s greatest resource – our students – are given every advantage to get the quality Marauder education that only Central State University can provide,” he said. Nearly two years ago, Thomas penned an Op-Ed supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and calling on community leaders to work with him to make sure the nation is safe for everyone. He also championed a pop-up fundraising effort for the university. The President’s scholarship fund balance is currently over $183,000. The 2022 GivingTuesday campaign recently launched on social media with a video featuring Thomas, the ninth president of Central State University, Ohio's only public Historically Black College or University and 1890 Land Grant institution. He said, “Central State University is proud to be a part of GivingTuesday. Help us reach our goal of, $250,000, as we strive to educate and empower the next generation of leaders and change-makers. I am kicking off the campaign with a gift of $10,000. Join me in supporting Central State University by becoming a believer. Visit csubelievers.donordrive.com or join the livestream event on Facebook or YouTube on November 29th at 6:00 p.m. for a GivingTuesday event.” About Central State University: Central State University is a public HBCU and 1890 Land-Grant Institution with a 135-year tradition of preparing students from diverse backgrounds and experiences for leadership, research, and service.
