Douglas Purnell, Jr., Class of 2010, recently embarked on a journey that may appear to some to be uncharted territory by creating a luxury fragrance. While Douglas is no stranger to unfamiliar waters, as the first African American to earn a doctorate in chemistry from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he believes the challenges are equal. This serves as a constant reminder of why he began his scientific pursuits. The creation of his cologne, Gentleman No. 4, can be described in three words: legacy, excellence, and entrepreneurship. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue endeavors outside of a traditional primary job, even though Chemistry was his chosen career path. His first venture into legacy and entrepreneurship was the independent publication of his book series "Little Scientist" and "Pressure Makes Diamonds" in 2017 (Available on Amazon). In keeping with his scientific background, he considered what is compatible with his brand and trade. As a result, he developed a signature scent that embodies excellence. Douglas, a self-made professional, strives for excellence in every facet of his life. This cologne's formula was created using a variety of notes, including top notes of bergamot and black currant, middle notes of jasmine and patchouli, and base notes of oak moss and ambergris.
