Douglas Purnell, Jr., Class of 2010, recently embarked on a journey that may appear to some to be uncharted territory by creating a luxury fragrance. While Douglas is no stranger to unfamiliar waters, as the first African American to earn a doctorate in chemistry from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he believes the challenges are equal. This serves as a constant reminder of why he began his scientific pursuits. The creation of his cologne, Gentleman No. 4, can be described in three words: legacy, excellence, and entrepreneurship. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue endeavors outside of a traditional primary job, even though Chemistry was his chosen career path.
