Good With Your Hands? How to Get a Great Job in Manufacturing

Companies often need entry-level employees who are naturally inclined toward working with their hands and willing to learn. Here are five tips for finding and landing a good manufacturing job. Narrow Your FocusConsider the types of hand work you enjoy along with your salary requirements and where you live as you narrow your focus to companies that match your needs and desires. Manufacturing positions are available in fields including textiles, welding, and machining, but some jobs may not appeal to you. Remember Social MediaLinkedIn connections can lead to a job, and there are other ways to use social media to find a manufacturing position. Check the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds of companies near you for insights into what they're like and whether they're hiring. You can use social media along with a company's website to understand its goals and culture. Meet Job QualificationsA manufacturing job may have a long list of qualifications, but you can avoid wasting your time by eliminating from your search any positions that you don't qualify for. If you're just starting out, look for an entry-level manufacturing job at a company with a reputation for training its own workers. You don't need experience to get a good position at some companies. Show Inherent SkillFind ways to include inherent skills and the desire to work with your hands in your job application. Include work for family businesses and volunteer organizations if your work experience is thin. If you're asked to provide a resume, include a skills section. A resume can be formatted in many ways, and one focused on skills can emphasize what you know and like to do rather than where you've worked. Interview WellIf you get an interview, show up on time. Dress well. If you don't know the company's preferences, wear a business suit or the best clothes you have. Avoid jeans, t-shirts, and showing tattoos, if possible. Display good posture and a positive attitude. Always answer honestly, but emphasize your desire to work with your hands and any relevant experience that the interviewer may have missed. When you apply for the right positions, emphasize what you offer instead of what you don't, and perform well during the interview, you can get a job that will allow you to work with your hands and move up in the company. A good manufacturing job can provide financial stability for your family now and perhaps for a lifetime.
