Johnson C. Smith University Named to Best Online Colleges in North Carolina List

JCSU’s program placed No. 26 on the list of 29, surpassing North Carolina universities Queens University Charlotte, William Peace University and Lenoir-Rhyne University. JCSU was the only private HBCU on the list. Other HBCUs on the list include North Carolina A&T, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Central University and Winston-Salem State University. “Making this list means we are reaching that population of students who may not otherwise be able to participate in a traditional college education,” said Dr. Melita **** Mitchell, associate vice president of Academic Affairs. “It means we are moving in the right direction.” Intelligent.com, is a resource for program rankings and higher education planning, identifies top schools in the state based on tuition costs, admission, retention, graduation rates, faculty, online student resources, the number of credits required to graduate and the online coursework delivery format. JCSU currently offers online programs in Business, sport Management, Criminology and Interdisciplinary Studies. Mitchell credits the full-time and adjunct faculty for their dedication to engaging online learners to make an education possible for non-traditional students. She hopes to strengthen the online programs by increasing degree programs and certificate programs that align with the University’s strategic plan. “We have a lot of opportunity for growth,” said Mitchell. “I look forward to doing an analysis on additional offerings.
