SC State Greats Up For Football Hall of Fame Induction

Posted By: S. Moore on December 23, 2022 South Carolina State alumni Marion Motley and John Gilliam are among 25 finalists for the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame 2022 class. The inductees will be enshrined at the hall’s 10th annual enshrinement ceremony April 21, 2023 at the Hilton Greenville. The finalists, who were announced on Dec. 19, include 22 modern era nominees among players, administrators, and coaches, plus three legacy nominees. Gilliam is a modern era finalist while Motley is a legacy selection who played before the modern era, which is considered before the 1960s and/or have died. Each nominee was either born, grew up or played in South Carolina, coached at a collegiate program in the state or had a positive and significant impact on the game in South Carolina. Motley, who grew up in Canton, Ohio, is one of four SCSU in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played with the Bulldogs in the 1940s before transferring to Nevada and went on to an eight-year pro career primarily with the Cleveland Browns. Gilliam, a Greenwood, S.C., native, was a standout wide receiver and track star for the Bulldogs in the late 1960s and went on to a 12-year NFL career with New Orleans, St. Louis, Minnesota and Atlanta. A third Black college alumnus – Livingstone great Ben Coates – is also a finalist. Coates is a CIAA Hall of Fame inductee who grew up in Greenwood, S.C., and played tight end with New England and Baltimore in the NFL. Voting is online at scfootballhof.org and open to everyone. The final round voting period runs through Jan. 10, 2023, and gives hall of fame members, football fans and media outlets an opportunity to vote for up to four modern era nominees and one legacy candidate. Pleasant), Ben Coates (Greenwood), Rickey Foggie (Laurens), Albert Haynesworth (Hartsville), Tony Rice (Woodruff), and Clyde Simmons, Jr. (Lane). Candidates by college:
