Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Commissioner Dr. KiKi Baker Barnes announced on December 21, 2022, that this group of students, who are all enrolled at GCAC member institutions, are the inaugural class of this newly formed program. GCAC Director of Strategic Communications Dani Wright will oversee the program and GCAC Digital Marketing Coordinator Alex D. Williams and UEN Marketing Coordinator Faith Daniels will serve as internship coordinators and assist with the development and execution of intern tasks. Hughey and the other interns will help cover all GCAC sponsored sports and will write press releases for championships, maintain statistical records, assist with social media management, record and edit video content, and assist with content creation for HBCU League Pass+, the new streaming site for the GCAC and its member schools. “Commissioner Baker Barnes and her staff and her staff are blazing the trail for HBCUs, and we are honored to support their efforts to create new lanes for others to follow,” said UEN CEO Todd Brown. “The precedent they’re setting will create a strong legacy and allow many young people to have a deeply meaningful college experience.” "Commissioner Baker Barnes and her staff are blazing the trail for HBCUs, and we are honored to support their efforts to create new lanes for others to follow," said UEN CEO Todd Brown.
