S.C. State seeking funds from legislature for university improvements, and other needs

S.C. State seeking funds from legislature for university improvements, and other needs
Posted By: S. Moore on January 19, 2023

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — South Carolina State University (SC State) President Alexander Conyers appeared before the South Carolina House of Representatives on Jan. 18 to request funding for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

The presentation was made before the Ways and Means Committee's Higher Education Subcommittee, according to a press release from SC State.

According to the press release, Conyers is asking state legislators to fund a $209 million budget request with five major capital projects to replace outdated facilities. He informed the subcommittee it has been at least 30 years since SC State has received a full state appropriation for a new academic facility and more recent projects forced the university to incur debt.

$195 million of the request is intended for facilities and infrastructure priorities, including a new convocation center, a new library, and three classroom buildings, according to the press release. The school is also seeking new residence halls, as Conyers stated SC State does not have the capacity to support both residential and academic projects. Funds for scholarships, matching funds for grants, and other academic needs at SC State comprise the remainder of the budget request.

Conyers emphasized SC State's need to compete with other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by having the programs, amenities, and capacity. He also informed the state legislators about Tennessee providing Tennessee State University with $300 million to address discrepancies in funding between public universities.
