Defensive Effort Leads Jackson State Ladies Past Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| The Jackson State women’s basketball team kept Bethune-Cookman to just 14.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-14 shooting performance on the way to a 77-52 win against the Wildcats on the road Monday eveing at Moore Gymnasium.

Jackson State had three players score in double figures, led by Jariyah Covington, who had 17 points. Ti’lan Boler tacked on 16 points, six assists and three steals and Daphane White helped out with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Led by Alexis Roberts’ three offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
JSU did an incredible job disrupting Bethune-Cookman shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. White’s two rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

Jackson State (15-8, 12-1) kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 17-16.
JSU kept the Wildcats from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Keshuna Luckett, to take a 24-19 lead with 6:57 left in the first half.
The Tigers proceeded to tack on five points to that lead and enjoyed a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime.
Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Tigers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Liz Martino, to expand its lead further to 57-35 with 21 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter.
JSU knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.
Jackson State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 62-35 with 8:45 to go in the contest.
Bethune-Cookman (10-13, 9-4 SWAC) narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-52 win.
Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

Inside the Numbers

The Tigers held the Wildcats to only 29.3 percent shooting from the field.
Jackson State never trailed in the second half on its way to victory.
JSU tallied 18 total assists in the game.
Jackson State had a stellar day defensively, holding Bethune-Cookman to 14 percent from three-point land on 14 attempts.
The blue and white had a 46-35 edge on the boards in the win.
The Tigers were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying eight blocks as a team.
JSU cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 16 offensive boards in the game.
Jariyah Covington led the Lady Tigers with a game-high 17 points.
Jackson State got seven rebounds from both Daphane White and Angel Jackson.
