HBCU Legacy Bowl Selects Jameis Winston, Terron Armstead as Honorary Captains

HBCU Legacy Bowl Selects Jameis Winston, Terron Armstead as Honorary Captains
Posted By: S. Moore on February 17, 2023

The 2nd HBCU Legacy Bowl selected Saints quarterback Jameis Winston and former Saints left tackle Terron Armstead as Honorary Captains on the event scheduled for Feb. 25.

Winston and Armstead are founding partners with the HBCU Legacy Bowl and other NFL players, such as NFL MVP and Super Bowl LVII champion Patrick Mahomes, who was the event's inaugural honorary captain.

JAMEIS WINSTON
New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston completed his third season with the team in 2022-23. Tampa Bay drafted Winston as the first overall draft pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida State University. He won the 2013 Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp, Davey O'Brien, and Manning awards while guiding the Seminoles to the 2014 BCS National Championship title over Auburn on Jan. 6, 2014. Winston passed for over 4,000 yards as a rookie, joining HBCU Legacy Bowl co-founder Doug Williams (1978) and Tom Owen (1974) as the only Bucs quarterbacks to reach the mark in their first seasons.

He was the NFL's passing leader in 2019 and earned a 2015 Pro Bowl selection.

TERRON ARMSTEAD
The former New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Terron Armstead will join Winston as one of the honorary captains. Armstead played four seasons for the HBCU football program at Arkansas-Pine Bluff until the New Orleans Saints drafted him in the third round (75th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He still holds the record for the fastest forty-yard dash in NFL Scouting Combine history at 4.71 seconds.

The four-time NFL Pro Bowler left the Saints via free agency to join the Miami Dolphins in the 2022 NFL offseason.

The second HBCU Legacy Bowl will showcase the talent of 100 HBCU student-athletes hoping to earn a roster spot in the NFL, CFL, USFL, XFL, or other professional leagues. The event will be held at Tulane University's Yulman Stadium at 3:00 PM CT on Feb. 25. The NFL Network will broadcast the contest with Steve Wyche (play-by-play) and Charles Davis (color analyst) in the booth.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl, presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, is a postseason all-star game showcasing the best NFL draft-eligible football players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It will be broadcast live on NFL Network. More than a football game, the week-long celebration of Black culture and history will provide invaluable exposure for HBCU students.
