HBCU Harris–Stowe State University Creates College Of STEM To Meet Demand For ‘The Fastest Growing Degree Field’ On Campus
Posted By: S. Moore on February 22, 2023

Harris-Stowe State University has created a new college to diversify the STEM sector in Missouri.

The new addition to the college campus will help with demand as it is “the fastest growing degree field” at the HBCU, according to the school’s website.

Leading the new College of STEM is Dr. Harvey R. Fields, Jr. who previously worked at Washington University as the Associate Dean.

Dr. Fields’ responsibilities as Dean will be to oversee the creation and implementation of the College of STEM, uphold the standards of each academic department and existing programs, and create new programs.

“Harris-Stowe has an exemplary track record of generating positive impact, strong outcomes and enhanced possibilities for underrepresented and under-resourced students,” Dr. Fields said in a statement released on the school’s website. “Furthermore, HSSU contributes to the improving status, standing and attractiveness of the Greater St.

Louis region as a preferred location for individuals, families and businesses. I fully identify with and embrace the Harris-Stowe mission. I am proud to join president LaTonia Collins Smith’s stellar leadership team, as the founding Dean of the College of STEM.”

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Fields as the inaugural Dean of the College of STEM,” HSSU president, Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith said in a statement. “His experience, knowledge and passion are extraordinary and will serve as a strong foundation for the development of this new College and will serve our students exceedingly well. He is a visionary who has demonstrated his ability to positively impact scholars. His unwavering dedication to helping under-resourced students achieve success syncs perfectly with HSSU’s core values.”

Dr. Fields has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Morehouse College and is still active in his St. Louis community through the Missouri Baptist Medical Center Board of Trustees and as chair of the St. Louis Chapter of the Morehouse College Alumni Association.
