|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 28, 2023 Today, the Peace Corps and Prairie View A&M University announced a new partnership centered on an undergraduate certificate program called Peace Corps Prep. Scheduled to launch on March 1, 2023, students in the Peace Corps Prep program will combine targeted coursework with hands-on experience, building the competencies needed to be strong Peace Corps volunteers or other intercultural fieldworkers. “Students today are passionate about working with communities abroad to solve important challenges,” Peace Corps Director of the Office of University Programs La’Teashia Sykes said. “Through the Peace Corps Prep program at Prairie View A&M University, students can develop skills specifically targeted to Peace Corps service and careers in the international development and service communities.” Peace Corps Prep will be structured as an interdisciplinary certificate program housed in PVAMU’s Office of International Programs. Through a combination of coursework and hands-on experience, students will develop four core competencies that are critical to intercultural fieldwork: foreign language proficiency, intercultural competence, professional and leadership development and sector-specific skills in one of Peace Corps’ six sectors. These skills will give them a competitive edge when applying for Peace Corps service and can be built upon and marketed throughout their careers. “Prairie View A&M University is pleased to partner with the Peace Corps, as the collaboration will help us advance an important aspect of our mission, which ‘… seeks to invest in programs and services that address issues and challenges affecting the diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population of Texas and the larger society including the global arena,’” said Executive Director of International Programs Godlove Fonjweng, who will also serve as the Peace Corps Prep coordinator at Prairie View A&M University. “The Peace Corps Prep program offers our students the opportunity to hone the skills they will need to be successful in the international arena, either as Peace Corps volunteers or serving the global community in other capacities.” Prairie View A&M is uniquely positioned to partner with the Peace Corps because it has a long-standing tradition of service; its Office of Volunteer Services & Civic Engagement provides students with service opportunities with the goal of challenging students to consistently serve the community and helping them to cultivate lasting behaviors of serving others. Additionally, Prairie View A&M’s designation as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) prepares students from diverse backgrounds for Peace Corps service so that future cohorts of volunteers will best represent the diversity of America. The Peace Corps has Peace Corps Prep partnerships with more than 125 leading academic institutions nationwide. Established in 2007, the program aims to meet the demand for Peace Corps volunteers with a broad and relevant set of expertise, and to support schools’ efforts to provide substantive, globally focused experiences for their students.
