Rahway High School Alumni Promote HBCUs to Seniors
|
Posted By: S. Moore on March 08, 2023 RAHWAY, NJ — On Friday, February 10, several special guests visited Rahway High School (RHS) in order to share with Rahway seniors their personal experiences attending Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). What made the two guests especially noteworthy was that they were both RHS graduates. Tymek Jones graduated from RHS in 2018. He went on to Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2022. He currently works as a scientist in Maryland. Jaida West graduated from RHS in 2017. She went on to Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, graduating in 2021. She currently works for Boeing. Dr. Michael Celoski, one of RHS's vice principals, organized the assembly. The U.S. Department of Education identifies 107 colleges in the United States as HBCUs, though three of these are currently closed. HBCUs can be found in 20 states, along with Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to the Higher Education Act of 1965, an HBCU is defined as "…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, ..." While the majority of HBCUs were established in the South during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War, there are exceptions. In fact, the very earliest HBCUs were founded in the antebellum period. For example, the oldest HBCU is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (1837), followed by the University of the District of Columbia, in Washington, D.C. (1851), and Lincoln University, in Pennsylvania (1854). During their talk, Jones and West shared some of their own personal stories about their time in college but also spoke about some of the specific benefits of attending HBCUs, what these schools have to offer, and why the Rahway students in attendance might wish to consider them. The presentation touched on a range of topics, including academics, social life, community activities, fraternities and sororities, and career opportunities, among others.
