Johnson C. Smith University Competing for Retool Your School Grant from The Home Depot

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on March 20, 2023 Johnson C. Smith University is once again competition in The Home Depot Retool Your School Campus Improvement Grant Competition. The competition is open to all HBCUs, which are divided into clusters based on size. Johnson C. Smith University is in cluster 3 and is competing with 20 other institutions. For a share of the total $2 million prize. The grant competition is important, as it provides much needed funding to historically underfunded HBCUs to update spaces around their campuses. “This year, JCSU has its sights on improving what everyone affectionately calls the Bull Pen – a gathering space featuring campus eateries and gaming tables,” said Dr. Davida Haywood, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “The area could use a paint and décor lift as well as updated lighting and flooring, turning it into a fun and unique hangout spot for students and the entire University community.” JCSU won its first grant through the competition last year, and the $30,000 grant was used to enhance Greenfield Gardens, which reopened during Homecoming celebrations in 2022. Haywood hopes that the University, with help, can win its second grant to make dreams of an improved student hangout space come to life. “This requires everyone, including members of the Charlotte community who can join in by voting for Charlotte’s only HBCU, Johnson C. Smith University.” Votes can be cast all day every day until midnight on Sunday, March 26, 2023 by visiting www.retoolyourschool.com/vote. Votes can also be cast on public Instagram and twitter posts using #RYSJCSU. “In the end, while the money would be put to good use, the Gold and Blue excitement, camaraderie and notion that we are better together focused on one goal matters even more,” said Haywood.
