The Wilberforce University Marching Band Steps to MLB Opening Day
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on March 22, 2023 On Thursday, March 30th, the nation's first, private, historically Black college/university (HBCU) will generate another first for its history. For the first time, the Wilberforce University marching band, the Hounds of Sound, will strut to syncopated rhythms all the way through the Cincinnati Reds' Opening Day Parade, signaling the start of the 2023 season. This is the first full season for the new WU marching band. The 147 members recently participated in the Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans last month. Directed by Dr. Virgil Goodwine, the Hounds of Sound is the only college marching band from the Greater Miami Valley (Dayton, Ohio area) that will participate in the parade. The direction for this year's Reds Opening Day Parade will be the standard 1.4 mile route, with the parade beginning at noon on the Race Street side of Findlay Market in Cincinnati. It will move through Race to 5th St., turning east on 5th and will end at the Taft Theater at 317 E. 5th St., 45402. The Reds will face the Pittsburgh Pirates in this season opener. Wilberforce University is the nation's first, private, historically Black college university (HBCU). Founded in 1856, Wilberforce is a member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the Ohio Library Link Consortium, and the MidSouth Conference. According to HBCU.com, Wilberforce is among the nation's top five HBCUs in the midwest. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
