NSU’s Joe Bryant named HBCU National Player of the Year for a second straight year

Moore on March 23, 2023 NORFOLK — Norfolk State guard Joe Bryant was named HBCU National Player of the Year by BOXTOROW for a second straight season, the organization announced Thursday. Bryant, a former star at Lake Taylor High and the two-time defending MEAC Player of the Year, was joined on the BOXTOROW All-American first team by teammate Kris Bankston. They are the first pair from NSU to be named to the first team in the same season. Bryant, a 6-foot-1 guard, averaged 17.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game this season. He scored 25 points in the Spartans’ MEAC Tournament quarterfinal win over Coppin State, 23 in the semifinals against North Carolina Central, and 18 against Howard in the title game loss. Bankston, a 6-9 forward, averaged 14.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, earning All-MEAC first team and all-defensive team honors. Bryant is the first player in NSU history to win the BOXTOROW HBCU Player of the Year award twice. Kyle O’Quinn and Pendarvis Williams both received the accolade once, in 2012 and ‘13, respectively.
