NSU women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers named HBCU National Coach of the Year

Posted By: S. Moore on March 30, 2023 Norfolk State women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers has been named the HBCU National Coach of the Year by BOXTOROW, the organization announced Wednesday. Vickers’ eighth season with the Spartans was a special one. He guided them to their second straight MEAC regular-season title and their first conference tournament championship in more than 20 years. NSU defeated Howard 56-52 in the MEAC Tournament final, but lost to No. 1 overall seed South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans finished 26-7 overall and 11-3 in the MEAC. Meanwhile, NSU guard Camille Downs made the HBCU BOXTOROW All-America first team and guard Deja Francis was on the second team. Vickers swept top conference honors as he was the MEAC Coach of the Year and MEAC Tournament’s Outstanding Coach. The Spartans finished No. 1 in the country in scoring defense (50.7) and field-goal percentage defense (31.5%). Howard’s Destiny Howell and Alabama State’s Ayana Emmanuel have been named the HBCU BOXTOROW National Co-Players of the Year.
