HBCU Day celebrated at Louisiana State Capitol

Posted By: S. Moore on April 19, 2023 BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Happy HBCU Day here in Louisiana! A day that was created with House Resolution 38 by state Rep. Jason Hughes, to honor all six historically Black colleges, and universities in the state of Louisiana. On April 18th, leaders and state officials, celebrated by discussing, how far HBCUs, have come, and how far they have to go. “Wonderful things are happening at our HBCUs, where our students are being nurtured and enriched,” said Kim Hunter Reed, commissioner of the Louisiana Board of Regents. But Hughes said HBCUs still have battles to fight. “Diversity, equity, and inclusion, unfortunately, has become a controversial topic in the state of Louisiana, which it should not be. And so we should all be very worried, not just our HBCUs, but all Louisiana citizens,” said Hughes. They say they will continue the fight during legislative sessions. Presidents and students were recognized in the state Capitol’s House and Senate. Officials also revealed a permanent exhibit at Capitol Park that celebrates Louisiana’s HBCUs.
