(WACH) — A team of four students from Claflin University will compete in a premier HBCU academic bowl, making it to the National Championship for the first time since 2014. The students are competing in the 34th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge's 2023 National Championship Tournament, after advancing from the qualifying competition in February. Claflin freshman Ian Adams, sophomore Charles Wofford, and seniors Zharia Casteal and Otiana Thompson will compete against 32 other teams in Torrance, California on April 20-21 for the National title and $75,000 institutional grant from Honda. “We are excited to compete on the national stage once again for the first time since 2014 hoping to put Claflin University back on the HCASC map,” said team captain Otiana Thompson in a statement. "We’ve spent hours studying and preparing for this opportunity and we hope we can make our campus proud. I wouldn’t trade this team or experience for anything, we’re truly locked in for life.” It's the 23rd year that a Claflin University team has competed in the competition. According to a release, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge sees four-student teams from Historically Black College's and Universities across the country compete to quickly answer a series of questions. These question topics range from history, science, literature, religion, math, the arts, pop culture, and sports.
