Attention all Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of study! Are you looking for a scholarship to help fund your education? Look no further than the Luther Vandross Foundation Scholarship for the 2023-2024 school year.

The scholarship was created to honor the late R&B legend, Luther Vandross, and is awarded to HBCU students who have demonstrated academic excellence, financial need, and a commitment to community service. This scholarship provides a unique opportunity to receive financial assistance for your education while honoring the legacy of an influential artist. Keep reading to learn more about the application process and eligibility criteria for this exciting opportunity.

To apply for The Luther Vandross Foundation Scholarship, you must apply using our 2023-2024 application link and have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5, be a Full-Time Student, attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and be in your 3rd (60+ qualified Credits), 4th or 5th year of your Undergraduate program.

Our scholarship requires that the scholarship candidate apply for Federal Student Aid, so it is recommended that applicants complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Get in-depth information on federal student aid programs and applying for financial aid at:

Applications for The Luther Vandross Foundation Scholarship are considered based on their completed application, along with a Last Dollar, need basis review. Once a student completes the application, and if you are deemed a Finalist you will be notified and if you are deemed a WINNER, you and your current HBCU will be notified and the combined information will be used to match you to available scholarships, administered by The Luther Vandross Foundation from $500.00 to $5,000.

Disbursement: Scholarships are awarded to recipients for the 2023-2024 academic year, and will cover amounts towards the student's tuition, or tuition based fees, as posted by the financial aid office. The Luther Vandross Foundation scholarship is made through the designated school and are not transferable to other academic institutions (we do not cover winter, or summer semesters). The funds are to be used for tuition, or tuition based fees only and may not be used for other costs on the recipient's bursar bill, or be used for refunds.



The Luther Vandross Foundation will review all online applications and select final candidates on the basis of:

  • Eligibility
  • Quality of submission
  • Student Aid Report (SAR) for the current Academic Year
  • Essay
  • Recommendation Letter (due by 6-23-23)
  • Transcript
  • Financial Need
  • Submission of the Luther Vandross Foundation's, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Consent & Submission Agreement

*1. Be enrolled full-time at a Historically Black College, or University from this list:

*2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR), for the 2023-2024 academic year.
*3. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.00 scale and upload your current Transcript, that shows your Spring 2023 Grades and Fall 2023 pending class list.
*4. Complete all required fields in the below application, or have them turned in by, or before the deadline of 7-01-2023.
*5. Turn in a Completed Letter of Recommendation, with their full contact details from a non-family member and it should include a date on the Letter of Recommendation. (Due by 6-23-23)
*6. Be an Undergraduate Student in their 3rd (60 credits earned, or more), 4th or 5th year, who needs money towards their Tuition and or Tuition based fees.
7. Upload Resume. (Optional)
*8. Upload Essay
*9. Communicate with the Luther Vandross Foundation Scholarship Manager if you are a Finalist and or a Winner! Winners will be notified between 8/1/23 to 8/15/23.
*10. Complete The Luther Vandross Foundation, 2023-2024 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Consent & Submission Agreement.
