Deion Sanders is ‘ashamed of’ every NFL team - except the Patriots

In fact, the Hall of Famer cornerback said that he was “ashamed of” every team in the league for what they did in the 2023 NFL Draft -- except for the New England Patriots. Sanders, who took the head coaching job at Colorado earlier this year, took to Twitter to call out 31 NFL teams for failing to draft a prospect from an HBCU (historically Black college or university). New England was the only franchise to take a player from an HBCU program, hence the team being excluded from Sanders’ ire. Sanders had previously coached at Jackson State, an HBCU program, and brought the program to prominence. While there, he coached defensive back Isaiah Bolden, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Patriots. After the draft, Sanders wrote a tweet congratulating Bolden for being drafted and calling out other teams for overlooking HBCU prospects. “So proud (of) you (Isaiah Bolden) You deserved to be drafted much higher but I’m truly proud of u,” Sanders wrote. “I know how much u want this. I’m ashamed of the 31 other NFL teams that couldn’t find draft value in ALL of the talented HBCU players & we had 3 more draft worthy players at JSU.” On Monday, Bolden wrote on Twitter that he agreed with his former coach’s statement. “Only time I’ll speak on this. I agree 1000% with (Sanders’) statement. And beyond thankful for the opportunity to be selected by the Patriots. (Let’s) get to work.” Outside of Bolden, there were a number of notable prospects in this year’s draft, including Florida A&M LB Isaiah Land, Arkansas-Pine Bluff OL Mark Evans II and Hampton WR Jadakis Bonds. These players had some serious draft stock. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler projected Land as a sixth-round pick and Evans as a seventh-round pick. While all three of those prospects didn’t have their names called in the draft, they did all sign as undrafted free agents this weekend. The “draft-worthy” Jackson State players Sanders was likely referring to were likely WR Dallas Daniels, CB De’Jahn Warren and LB Aubrey Miller, who Brugler projected to go in the seventh round. Daniels, Warren and Miller were also signed as UDFAs over the weekend. HBCU teams have a history of being overlooked. However, the subsection of college programs has gained some steam in recent years, with Sanders being a big part of that movement.
