According to Zippia, as of 2021, only 3.6% of dentists in America are Black or African American. If you’re an aspiring dentist or dental hygienist looking to start a career in thee dental industry, check out these top HBCU dental schools and programs. Howard University - College of Dentistry Established in 1881, Howard University’s College of Dentistry is the fifth oldest dental school in the United States. The school aims to “remain a national resource for dental leaders and a comprehensive education and research institution that attracts highly motivated and academically accomplished students….” Students can apply for the following programs at the College of Dentistry:
International Dentist Program Meharry Medical College - School of Dentistry Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the most prestigious black medical school, Meharry Medical College, has the International Track program within their School of Dentistry. The program is available to students looking to further their education in dentistry and have already received their dental training at an accredited institution. Upon completion of the 2-year program, students will receive an A.D.D.S. Tennessee State University For those looking for a career in dental hygiene, Tennessee State University offers two programs prospective students can choose from. Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, TSU’s Dental Hygiene program’s course of study “provides a broad-based education in the social, behavioral, and biological sciences with special emphasis toward teaching, community health, and research.” Students can choose between an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Dental Hygiene (Fall 2022).
