THE LUTHER VANDROSS FOUNDATION DONATES OVER $1M TO HBCUS

THE LUTHER VANDROSS FOUNDATION DONATES OVER $1M TO HBCUS
Posted By: S. Moore on May 10, 2023

Last week (April 22), the Luther Vandross Foundation, Waterford, Primary Wave Music and the Luther Vandross Estate, celebrated the educational philanthropy of the icon. The inaugural luncheon took place in Philadelphia at the Historic Belmont Mansion in West Fairmount Park.

According to Black Enterprise, Waterford’s Creative Director, Alice Bastin, commented on the importance of Waterford’s involvement in the foundation. “Music is an emotional thread that will be integral to our new brand narrative at Waterford.” She added, “It’s incredibly important to me that Waterford supports the work of the Luther Vandross Foundation and promotes cultural conversations around diversity and inclusivity. It is an honor for Waterford to be able to contribute to the important work of the Luther Vandross Foundation and to give talented students attending HBCU’s the financial aid to further their passions in education.”

Primary Wave Music partnered with the Vandross estate in 2021 to manage all of the singer’s assets. Larry Mestel, CEO & Founder, Primary Wave Music, commented on the deal, “We look forward to working with Carmen and the estate to help expand Luther’s influence.”

Vandross being an advocate for education, left a portion of his estate to HBCUs. To date, over $1 million in scholarships have awarded. Last year, $250,000 was awarded from the foundation.

Established in 2021, the Luther Vandross Foundation’s goal is to continue Luther’s legacy of providing financial assistance to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The website states the goal of the foundation:

“Our mission is to provide financial assistance to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), thus extending Luther Vandross’ commitment to helping students achieve their goal of completing their degree and preparing for their next endeavors.”
